During World War Two

Luzon  ---  USAFFE

Walter Cushing, part owner of the Rainbow gold mines in Abra Province, was the first to organize a guerrilla force. The first recorded guerrilla action took place on New Years Day, 1942. This caught the attention of Col. John P. Horan, Commanding Officer of the 43rd Infantry Philippine Scouts. Cushing was given a commission of Major, and upon the fall of Bataan his unit was designated the 121st Infantry by Gen. Wainwright.

Maj. Cushing died 19 Sep 1942 when he was wounded in a Japanese ambush. Rather than surrender, he saved his last bullet for himself.
